0.3.0 (prototype) — [release-date]

First public build: a free early build of the CSV / TSV editor for Windows. It contains only the Free feature set; other features are not part of this build.

What this build does

  • Opens and saves CSV / TSV files without changing them. A file you open and save without editing is written back byte for byte (this holds with Save format on, the default; with the default quote settings and no per-column quote rules; and with the encoding, delimiter, BOM and line endings unchanged). After an edit, the encoding, byte-order mark, line endings and the final line break are kept; only what you changed (and unneeded quotes and blank lines) is touched.
  • Encodings and delimiters. Reads and writes UTF-8 (with or without BOM), UTF-16, Shift-JIS, EUC-JP, JIS (ISO-2022-JP), GBK, GB18030, Big5 and EUC-KR. The encoding and the delimiter (comma, semicolon, tab, pipe) are detected automatically and can be chosen by hand when opening, reopening and saving. A first line sep=; (Excel's way of naming the delimiter) is understood and written back. Values such as leading zeros, long numbers and dates stay exactly as written.
  • Editing. Undo and redo (with a limit on the memory they use), cut / copy / paste (also as CSV, Markdown or HTML), insert, delete and move rows and columns, fill down and right, transpose, insert the date or time, find and replace, sort, tidy up text, quote settings, delete empty rows.
  • Looking at data. Header row, hide and freeze rows and columns, split view, rainbow columns, whitespace marks, zoom, full screen, auto-fit of column widths, a command palette, read-only mode, a tail mode that follows a growing file, and a structure check that finds rows with a wrong number of columns. A confirmation appears before a file that is larger than a safe part of the memory is opened.
  • Tabs and windows. Several files in tabs (reorder, pin, close others, reopen a closed tab, a list of all tabs, Ctrl+1 to Ctrl+8, Ctrl+PageUp / PageDown). The selected tab clearly stands out, unsaved files are marked, same-named files show their folder, and tab widths and several rows of tabs can be set in the settings.
  • Menus. The menus are drawn by the program (they are never cut off at the window edge) and are fully usable with the keyboard (Alt or F10, arrows, letters).
  • Appearance. Light and dark follow Windows or can be fixed in the settings; an accent colour; the text size of the interface (14, 18 or 22 px); a choice of the grid font and colours.
  • Safe by design. A backup is made before saving; an open file that another program changes is noticed; the colours, column widths and comments you add live in a separate sidecar file, never in the CSV; keyboard shortcuts can be changed.
  • Languages. English and Japanese. English is the default; the language can be switched on the first screen and in the settings.

Privacy

  • No network access unless you ask for it: the update check is off by default, and the Check for updates button on the App Information page checks only when you press it. Nothing is sent but the program's version number. There is no telemetry. This build is Free only, so it never fetches the signed list of revoked license keys, and never performs the renewal check for subscription keys.
  • The executable carries product, company and copyright information, and no build-machine paths.

Known limitations

  • Windows only. The whole file is loaded into memory, so very large files are not supported.
  • The build is signed with a code-signing certificate, but Windows SmartScreen may still show a warning for a program that few people have downloaded yet.
